Makhachev explains UFC 336 refusal and points to Ramadan
Islam Makhachev explained why he will not defend the welterweight belt at UFC 336 in January: he wants Carlos Prates and Michael Morales to fight for the interim title and will face the winner. Dana White said the decision came from the champion's refusal to fight near Ramadan.

Várias especulações nas últimas semanas apontavam que Islam Makhachev colocaria em jogo o cinturão dos meio-médios em janeiro, no UFC 336, diante de Carlos Prates. O russo, porém, sequer apareceu na programação do evento, confirmado para Toronto, no Canadá.
No último fim de semana, o Ultimate anunciou que Prates enfrentará Michael Morales pelo cinturão interino da divisão até 77kg no UFC 336, com vistas a um futuro confronto com o atleta do Daguestão. Os motivos da decisão foram revelados pelo campeão linear nesta semana.
Em entrevista ao site “pound4padel”, Makhachev respondeu sobre a recusa em lutar já em janeiro. Segundo o atual detentor do título, o momento permite que o brasileiro e o equatoriano, os dois melhores cotados para enfrentá-lo, disputem essa posição, e o vencedor fará depois a luta pelo controle da divisão.
“O Carlos e o Michael vão lutar e determinar quem será o verdadeiro desafiante. E eu enfrentarei o vencedor. Os dois terão de se enfrentar… me ofereceram a luta contra o Carlos, e ele perdeu para o Ian (Machado Garry), a quem já venci. Se eu o vencer, o Michael seria o próximo da fila, e ele não está lutando e esperando pela chance dele. Que eles lutem e vamos ver quem será mesmo o próximo desafiante”, declarou o russo.
A decisão gerou irritação de Carlos Prates, que foi às redes sociais reclamar do russo preferir esperar que ele e Morales se enfrentassem do que lhe dar a chance do title shot, ao qual argumenta ser o desafiante número 1 da categoria.
Durante a coletiva do UFC 333, Dana White afirmou que a decisão de colocar o cinturão interino em disputa foi motivada pela recusa do campeão linear em lutar pouco antes do Ramadã, mês sagrado para o islamismo, no qual os praticantes jejuam do nascer ao pôr do sol. O Ramadã de 2027 começará em 8 de fevereiro, poucos dias depois do UFC 336, marcado para 30 de janeiro, e Makhachev e os lutadores de sua equipe — como seu hoje treinador Khabib Nurmagomedov — sempre se abstêm de lutar nesse período para respeitar os preceitos de sua religião.
