A decisão foi conduzida por Jason Wilcox, diretor de futebol, junto com o executivo-chefe Omar Berrada — uma escolha generosa diante da forma do United.
Uma derrota por 3 a 0 para o Bournemouth em casa, no domingo, havia sido precedida na quarta-feira por um 4 a 1 sofrido fora de casa contra o Como, na elite do futebol europeu.
O United somou duas vitórias em 12 partidas e foi eliminado da Carabao Cup pelo Brighton. É o 16º colocado, um ponto acima da zona de rebaixamento.
Wilcox, que pressionou para manter Carrick, quer ver se o técnico de 45 anos consegue mudar a trajetória. Se ele sobreviveria a mais uma tarde ruim em Stamford Bridge é uma incógnita.
A Roma visita o clube pela Champions League três dias depois, com o Aston Villa em casa pela liga no sábado seguinte. A trégua também pode simplesmente comprar tempo para Wilcox preparar um substituto.
Qualquer movimento por Eddie Howe custaria cerca de £3 milhões em compensação ao Newcastle. Ele é o principal candidato de Wilcox caso haja mudança, e quer o cargo; quando saiu, em julho, houve um acerto sobre o restante de seu contrato, e é por isso que a multa seria devida.
